Line Crossing Video Analytics

Line crossing is a type of video analytics that uses lines specifically to determine unwanted or suspicious behavior. These lines are drawn by the administrator in the graphic user interface of the IP surveillance system. Many brands now offer this video analytic such as AXIS Communications, and Hikvision.

When an entity, whether human, object, animal, or vehicle crosses the line, the system recognizes it as a cause for alarm; alerting the administrator of this unwanted or suspicious behavior. From here on out, this is called an “event’. Some events that we can monitor using line crossing are:

1. Intrusion Detection

Video analytics to detect unauthorized entry into specified areas. When any moving entity (humans, animals, vehicles, etc.) crosses the line, the system triggers alarms. To avoid false alarms caused by irrelevant entities such as stray animals, this video analytic also uses body or vehicle recognition to only trigger alarms when it determines a person or vehicle has crossed the line. It is used to protect areas such as perimeters, and any valuable asset such as objects in a museum.

2. Wrong Direction Detection

Video analytics to detect if a moving entity (human, vehicle) is moving towards the wrong direction. This is used to monitor one-way roads for violators, human traffic flow at entrances and exits such as in a fire exit, and counting people who enter and leave a store.

3. People Counting

Video analytics for quantifying people in a specific area. This is used to monitor areas with limited capacity such as entertainment venues; stores to measure demand, service duration, and customer engagement; any area where human traffic flow needs to be monitored.
